Club Update June

June Club Update: Your Pic, Club Milestone & Shining a light on player well-being

We are kicking off June with a HUGE club milestone – MCC 1, led by Head Coach Robyne Dawson, has qualified for Premier Division 1 finals for the first time!

See below for important dates in June re finals and highlights from last month, including sharing MCC Netball’s attendance at an MFC leadership & well-being session.

FYI the committee are working on a few things in the background, Nicky Lock and Gemma Rowan are preparing for a number of events in the second half of 2019, Geri Ryan is preparing all things financial and back end logistics for Spring Season 2019 member intake, and all the committee are turning the May Strategic plan workshop into an action plan (led by Felicity Ryan) that we can share with the club – and maybe tap into some of your expertise to help make things happen!

LEADERSHIP AND WELLBEING DEVELOPMENT SESSION

On May 29 the Melbourne Football Club held a leadership development session on member well-being and creating safe environments at sporting clubs, and each sporting section of the MCC was able to nominate six people to attend.

Given the topic, the members that attended from MCC Netball ensured a spread across club & Monday/Tuesday night competition and included (left to right in picture below) Safety Officer Jess Sewell, MCC 5 Captain Georgie, Head Coach Robyne Dawson, Coach Michelle Stabb, Member Protection Information Officer Kate Rowan and MCC 1 Captain Renee Johns.

The session was led by David Williams, a qualified and registered psychologist based in Melbourne, Australia, specialising in sport and exercise psychology, and is the current president of the College of Sport and Exercise Psychology in Australia.

Some info and concepts flagged by David:

  1. Mental health is a continuum.  We all move back and forward on it but if we get stuck at the negative end – that’s a problem
  2. Everyone has a role to shape a safe environment
  3. Sporting clubs are good places for mental health support

Also the image below is the four legged chair drawn by David with some key pillars to well-being; sleep, relationships, diet, movement.

Our MCC Netball representatives found the topic highly relevant to our club, and provided feedback that it is very beneficial for people in leadership roles to know that creating a safe environment, making people feel connected through authentic relationships and understanding of Mental health literacy, as well as the role of empathy, being a club that cares, by simply having a chat with members when they seem to be a bit 'off' and not themselves, can make a big difference.

KEEPING PLAYER WELL-BEING TOP OF MIND

It is timely to remind everyone that we have in place two Club Support roles that are specifically available to support player-wellbeing.

Safety and Information Officer, Jess Sewell, ensures we have a reporting mechanism for player injuries and to provide support to players in accessing the Netball Victoria Insurance if needed, to keep in touch with their recovery and ensure that approval by a medical practitioner is provided before players return to playing.

If you or someone in your team suffers an injury, please email mccnetball@gmail.com and advise Jess on the injury, how it happened, anticipated recovery time and any further guidance you need.

Member Protection Information Office, Kate Rowan, is an impartial representative of the Club who supports members by providing confidential support through:

  • listening to and understanding any concerns raised
  • providing information about the rights and responsibilities of the Club, and its players
  • explaining the options available to an individual or group, and
  • explaining any next steps that we can take to help you out.

As a general rule of thumb, the first person you should bring any concerns to is your coach/head coach, or the Chair of MCC Netball.  If for any reason you don't feel comfortable doing that (and wish to have a confidential conversation), the next option is your MPIO. To contact Kate, please email mccnetball.mpio@gmail.com

If you have any questions about these roles have a chat directly with Jess, Kate or Kal.

OUR AMAZING PLAYING MEMBERS!

We are stoked to have photos of (almost) all our playing members on the portal – it’s something the committee have been wanting to do for a few years, ace that it’s finally happened! We’ll be looking at providing more info about our players – maybe a bit of a bio - to help old and new members connect, in the next season – so stay tuned :)

It was a very busy month for our Head Coach, Robyne Dawson, and all those involved in organising and running trials – however the vibe on both trials dates were excellent, running a record 9 runs in two hours!

Shout out to Gemma Rowan and Cassy Cayzer for helping out – Alex Ball for on the day and all back of house emails plus ensuring our team submissions made it in on time to Parkville – plus a big thanks all current players that made new players feel comfortable on the day, a huge help!

A special shout out to Captain of the MCC Premier Women’s Cricket Team, Tegan Parker, for providing assistance during netball trials – and Henry (Sharyn Casey’s Son) for taking some fabulous photos at trials - fantastic to have a broader team that we can call upon for added support!

A reminder that we have amazingly generous netty knowledge banks in our club – special thanks to Alex & Renee who led a specialist training session, and Lexie & Steph who took the time to share their expertise, with MCC 5 at training last month – great to be able to tap into members for cross-club support.

A final note to say many thanks to players across all teams for stepping up and filling in for other teams as needed – we have had a lot of player unavailability this season, which definitely impacts team consistency, so appreciate everyone’s club first attitude and support!
