MCC Netball vs Hong Kong CC

Published Sun 14 Feb 2016

The below is an excerpt from the official Melbourne Cricket Club's Hong Kong tour wrap.

MCC Netball welcomed HKCC Netball on a warm afternoon on Sunday February 7, at the State Netball and Hockey Centre (SNHC), Parkville, for the first match of the 2016 HKCC Multi-sport Tour! The last time the two clubs played in Melbourne in 2011 was the beginning of MCC Netball, so this visit holds great memories for MCC in particular.

The afternoon kicked off with the traditional trophy match played between the two clubs and an onslaught of MCC supporters cheering for the trophy team. The HKCC players were hard pressed to keep up, thanks to a strong performance from our players, largely from our MCC’s first team. MCC emerged as the victors in the trophy match (73-17). The increasing summer heat put the HKCC netballers to the test in the second match, a social game, against MCC Blue, which also resulted in an MCC victory (34-30).

To celebrate an afternoon of sporting prowess and club camaraderie, MCC hosted a welcoming afternoon tea at SNHC. Shelley White, MCC Netball Chair welcomed HKCC Netball, and presentations were made to both clubs. MCC Netball trophy team captain Renee Johns and head coach, Heather Dawkins, were presented with the HKCC-MCC Tournament Trophy, while MVPs were presented to Donna Baxter from HKCC for her tight defence and to Jen Barrett from MCC for her brilliant shooting and attack to the ball.

There was a small rest period for the HKCC Netball team to shake off their jet lag before the final social match against MCC Red on Wednesday February 10. This close fought match ended with HKCC winning (36-26), ending the tournament with an overall 2-1 win to MCC Netball.

To celebrate the conclusion of a successful 2016 MCC Multi-sport Tournament for netball, the players and coaches from both MCC and HKCC enjoyed a fun-filled and exuberant evening in the Members' Dining Room. The event was also made memorable with attendance from HKCC's guest Pat McCarthy, the first Australian Netball captain at the inaugural World Cup in England 1956, and Australian Netball Hall of Fame inductee. Representatives from all MCC Sporting Sections were present and results for the sections were shared with good humour and friendly rivalry.

Well done to all 24 players who participated in MCC Netball Section's third tournament against HKCC, and to coaches Heather Dawkins, Sara Miller and Renee Johns. A special mention to HKCC tour coordinator Donna Baxter, HKCC Netball convenor Krystle Edwards, and MCC Netball event coordinator Linden Clarke for ensuring a well-coordinated and enjoyable tournament for both the HKCC and MCC Netball representatives.
